Works great for thick, puffy fur. Self-cleaning feature saves tons of time.
This is such a cool brush! It pulls out loose undercoat nicely and the release button works perfectly. I’ve had the brush for a long time and it still works great – the plastic has not broken nor have the pins rusted. I can’t imagine using a slicker brush without a self-cleaning feature ever again. So easy to use, just push the button and the fur falls out in one giant sheet. I got the large and it’s a dark forest green color. Unless you have a teeny tiny dog, I would suggest getting the large, as it has more surface area and will make the brushing go faster. This brush works best on animals with long or puffy fur. I would not use it on short or sleek fur. Even if the animal sheds a lot, this is not the brush for them. That being said, it only really worked on one of my dogs – the one with frizzy, puffy fur. My other dog has thick but sleek fur that is closer to the body, and it doesn’t work on her. It just won’t pull the fur out and it actually would probably cut her skin if I continued to use it on her. The reason it works best on long, puffy, textured fur is because the little needle bristles need some texture to stick to in order to pull the fur out. Another reason you want to use it on that type of coat is so you are brushing the FUR and not the SKIN. If you try and brush thin or sleek fur, you risk hurting your pet. Also, always be careful brushing bellies where the fur is thinner! Brush gently, these pins are sharp and can make your pet bleed. If used correctly, it’s a great brush. Overall, this is a very useful grooming tool and I would definitely recommend it, provided that your pet has the appropriate fur type for this brush.

Young Puppies Won’t Like It At First; *Effective* At Removing Loose Hair:
Let me say that the SAFARI SELF-CLEANING MEDIUM SLICKER BRUSH FOR DOGS is probably the best tool to use for removing loose and dead hair from your dog that doesn’t involve a blade (like FURminator Short Hair deShedding Tool for Small Dogs and cutting or thinning the coat.Although you’ll still get a few stray hairs flying away as you brush, most of the pesky hair gets trapped at the bottom of the teeth, the slicker brush collects and removes fur really well. And it’s easily cleaned by pressing the back button. The bottom lifts up and pushes the hair up and off of the teeth and into the trash making clean-up less than 2-seconds.The SAFARI SLICKER feels nice and comfortable in the hand and makes quick work of grooming your furry kid’s hair. One piece of advice for puppy parents who have a youngster under 6-months of age: start with one of the PetZoom Self Cleaning Grooming Brush, 2-Pack. Those brushes have balls on the tips, so it doesn’t scratch the pup’s sensitive skin while brushing, and even though it doesn’t remove as much hair as SAFARI SLICKER it’s self-cleaning and your pup won’t be scared of it. I didn’t know this and bought the SAFARI SLICKER first and my Shiba puppy, who was about 10-weeks old when I gave her the first brushing, HATED the Safari Slicker Brush. After the first time, she would run when she saw me take it out and wouldn’t stop fidgeting while I brushed her. She didn’t even want treats!I came to Amazon and looked for something else, which led me to the PetZoom Brush, and that one she handled with no problem from the very first use. I guess the balls on the teeth didn’t hurt or scratch like the teeth on this one — even though I was hardly using any pressure with the Safari Brush — which is why she didn’t mind getting brushed. As she got older, she’s now 8-months as of this writing, I decided to go back to the SAFARI BRUSH to remove more hair right before a bath, and to my surprise she didn’t fidget or try and run from it. She did look at it with distrust at first, but when I used it she didn’t mind at all. This was sometime around the 6-month mark, so I think her skin toughened up or matured. Now I use it for every brushing and she doesn’t mind at all.

Best brush in years for our Goldens
We have a pair of golden retrievers and you will all know that they do take a fair bit of brushing. We’ve used many slicker brushes over many years including the Furminator, and we do still use the Furm and a comb now and then. But the daily brush-up is always a slicker brush and we’ve gone through many of them. Some better than others but they aren’t all a decent size and the bristles usually go soft fairly quickly. This one is replacing another Amazon “top seller” which was OK but a little small and the handle broke quickly. This Safari brush is great! It’s big and feels very solid in the hand. Teeth are nice and sharp and springy and it feels like it will be a durable brush. So far it’s working well and my dogs are loving it.Oh, I almost forgot to mention the “quick-release” spring button in this one. It feels like a gimmick but it actually works and makes this brush exceptionally easy to clean. Unlike most others you won’t cut up your fingers trying to back-swipe the hair out of it.All in all I’d give this 10 out of 10 and I hope it lasts a long time. Great price too.

    ALMOST PERFECT!
The brush is great, much better than the other I tried which was more expensive, however, when the button is pushed the needles of the brush don’t go all the way up, so if you don’t have gloves you can injure your hand when cleaning the hair if not careful. Other than that, the brush is great. Probably just a quality control issue on my brush. Still just as good as some of the more expensive brushes out there.

I read numerous bad reviews about the prongs getting messed up from the cleaning function. We’ve used this brush 50 times and there’s been no problems! It’s nice and big for medium to large dogs. My cats LOVE it too, but I would recommend a smaller size for cats. Fantastic purchase at a price you can’t find anywhere else! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! 🙂
