AIRLINE CAPABLE PET CARRIER TO BACKPACK PET CARRIER
Having designed and sold multi thousands of pet carriers and hearing every issue and concern I can answer this here as best I can. I know it is hard when shopping online. All of the pet carriers you see look similar and its hard to compare materials, features and the “look and feel” as one can easily do in person, but here is my summary of what to look for in a pet carrier and what is most important to know or ask, so look for these key features in all brands.
Premium Brand Self Locking Zipper and Padded Faux Fleece Bedding. The Nylon Fabric is both waterproof and easily washable typically only needing a wipe down, and the tote folds to less than 3″ when not in useSturdy and Lightweight – Weighing in at only 2.7 lbs, Designed with Breathable Mesh on all Sides & Top for Proper VentilationIncluded Waist and Chest Strap for Easy of CarryingPadded Adjustable StrapsTwo Storage Compartments for Treats, Meds & Cell PhonesIncluded Faux Fleece Padded BeddingAdjustable Backpack StrapsLeash Tether
PET SAFETY & COMFORT
The pet tote you choose should have locking zippers and very strong mesh. They should have a leash ring to attach a leach and to insure your pet can be secured while stressed during travels. They should have well designed and secure adjustable carrying straps, in the case of a backpack. They should have a comfortable bedding pad. All of Mr. Peanut’s tote designs include all of these and more. I also add a thick and plush faux fleece pad for your pet’s comfort.
MULTIPLE POCKETS
These are one of my pet peeves as the zipper quality can turn a fantastic carrier into a loser very fast. When the zipper breaks at the airport or even in your car your carrier of choice becomes basically worthless. Make sure the brand you are looking at includes hi quality zippers from a reputable zipper brand. My totes are all designed with only premium brand zippers, and I improve and upgrade them often as new and better versions come along.
WAIST, CHEST & SHOULDER STRAPS
Adjustable & Padded Waist and Chest Straps. Soft Sided Pet Carriers by definition are frameless and are mostly only supported by thin steel wire running along the edges and sides of the tote. Keep in mind when you look over images in a listing on any product those will be taken to show off the product in the best possible way, and are often edited to improve the look of the product image.
3 WINDOW VENTILATION
Designed with a Ventilated Roof and meets all airline regulations of under forward seat compatibility including Delta, Southwest, United, American, Virgin and others. It is very hard to see differences in materials and structure in a product image, but all of my totes are designed with a very strong waterproof nylon material that is also used in the manufacture of military grade parachutes. The materials used help to avoid the sagging, wrinkled look and give the totes additional structure.
AIRLINE REQUIREMENTS
Always keep in mind each airline sets their own specific requirements, and they can even vary from their domestic, international, and shuttle services so it is always advised to check with your airline of choice. All will require your pet to be comfortable in the carrier, and to remain under the seat in front of you. All prefer a soft sided carrier for its adjustability and we have designed our carrier to comply with major airlines such as Delta, United, Southwest, etc.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR PET – I always recommend to measure your pet while comfortably laying down as this is the typical position during flight time. Keep in mind all of my airline approved totes are designed with pet safety and comfort as the priority, and then by airline under seat requirements, so sizing is limited by that criteria.

Thoughtfully Designed, Versatile, Well Made
My curious and active 7-year-old indoor/suburban porch kitty is learning to travel and become an adventure cat. He took to the harness and leash pretty well, although I can’t really walk him in my neighborhood as he’s terrified of cars and lawnmowers. And he doesn’t walk very fast. In anticipation of bigger and better adventures, I started looking into backpacks. I wanted him to feel safer being outside and we needed to be able to cover more ground. I was skeptical of the space-pack ones, and the array of other options, then I saw this one. That itâs handmade in the US was attractive to me, as was the reasonable price. If my cat wasnât going to be all in with this, I didnât want to make a huge investment.SIZING: My cat is athletic, thin build, long-legged, 8.5 lbs. He can sit upright in this bag, and lift his paws a bit to poke his head out. He can also curl up on the fleece pad at the bottom of the bag and sleep (or cower when a car goes by). The stability insert at the bottom is sturdy enough support him and he doesnât sag the bag, but I think a larger cat might. Itâs possible that a sturdier insert could be an improvement, but I donât think this pack would work for a large cat anyway, both from the sagging aspect of weight, and the lack of room to move around, change position, or even get in and out of the bag when being gently shoved by his or her human.COMFORT: For the human, this bag is very comfortable to wear on both back or front, with nice padded straps. It doesnât have a waist strap, but for a 10-lbs load you donât need one.FEATURES/PRACTICAL USAGE: Hereâs how Rorschach and I evolved with this bag. When it arrived, I put it upright by the front door, with the front drawbridge screen open, for a few days and occasionally put treats inside. I kept his harness and leash nearby so he associated the two. He got to know it a bit that way and one day, while he was wearing his harness and leash, I gently pushed him in and zipped it up, and secured the leash to the sewn-in D-ring inside via a small carabiner (not included). Success!Alas, our first short trip didn’t end well. I had the backpack on my back, and as we were walking home after what I thought was a good first outing, a car came up the street from behind us (which meant that he was looking straight at it though the front screen) and he shat himself. This was, of course, mortifying for him. Thankfully, the bag comes apart and the parts (all well made) were easily hand washed and dried. The next time I took him out, I wore the backpack on my front. This was the gamechanger, as now he can see where we’re going, and I can interact with him, feed him treats through the top zipper, pet him, etc. When cars go by, I turn so he isnât looking straight at them. Often while we’re walking, I keep the top completely open and he sticks his head out and looks around. Although the solid flap at the top has a snap to keep it out of the wayâa nice featureâthe screen flap doesn’t, so I have to collapse it toward the inside of the bag, or shove it behind the solid flap. That could be an added feature: something to hold the top screen open for long hikes when the cat wants to check out the scenery. He doesnât try to jump out the top when weâre walking, primarily because he feels secure in the bag. And if he did, his leash is attached to the D-ring.When we get somewhere, such as a park bench, I sit downâand the bag is now on my lap if Iâm wearing it in frontâor I can take it off and set it down next to me on the benchâand we switch to using the front drawbridge-style opening. It gives him a secure spot to check out the surroundings and when heâs ready to venture out, he can. Again, his leash is attached to the D ring (and my hand if Iâve removed the bag). Use either the top opening OR the frontâwhen both are open, the bag loses rigidity and can collapse in on itself. And if the cat needed to return quickly to the safety of the bag, you wouldnât want to have to try and secure both openings. I havenât tried plane or car travel with the bag yet, but laying the bag down horizontally and using either the top or bottom openings is also an option. All the ingress/egress options make this bag extremely versatile and are probably my favorite feature. After more practice and while wearing the bag in front, weâve learned to use the front drawbridge opening while we’re walking: The leash is long enough that I can, while standing, open the front, he jumps down and walks for a while. (We do this when we get back to our street and he heads for the house on foot). When I hear a car, I scoop him up quickly and shove him back inside that front opening and zip it up, all while wearing the pack on my front. I see the potential to train him to jump back in himself, but that will take some time. He doesnât mind being put back inâhe seems to know that Iâm doing so for his safety. Another feature that comes in handy are the pockets. I can stick my phone, treats, house key, etc. in the zipper pocket, and bring a water bottle in that pocket. Thereâs even a little poop-bag pocket with a dispenser. As we continue to use the pack, I anticipate being able to wear it on my back, with the top open, as long as weâre not around a lot of traffic. Every time we go out, he gets more comfortable. A nice additional feature, although I havenât yet had to use it because Iâve been wearing the bag in front, are the zipper locks. If he gets curious enough to try and push his way out, he wonât be able to. The tiny plastic buckles might be a little hard to manage if you have big fingers, but theyâre an excellent safety feature.RECOMMEND: Even though I pointed out small potential improvements, I give it five stars overall for a being a great bag with tons of versatility and nice features, and at a reasonable price. And itâs opened up doors for having adventures with my cat, which has been a longtime goal. Heâs highly enriched by our neighborhood outings and I have more ability to travel beyond now. Win-win.

Amazing if only it was bigger – too big for 14 inch cat IMO
This is one of the the greatest constructions of cat backpack convertible carriers I’ve seen – sadly we had to return it as our cat does not fit. The site description says it’s 17 inches longest/tallest height with 16inches internal height but the one that arrived to us measured closer to 16.25 inches, which with the combined thick inner padding comes to about an internal height of 15 inches. The inserts that keep the bag’s shape to keep the floor bottom solid and the backside extra reinforced (longest backside – vertical tall-side lying down) are faux fur covered and quite thick and solid. They are removable, (with the velcro soft-sides of the attachments within the backpack lining, and the scratchy part attached to the underside of the inserts (which is wise)). But if your cat is 14 inches long with a rather long tail or more in my opinion, they’re not going to have the greatest amount of room to turn around inside without looking a bit scrunched especially if you have a medium hair to long-hair cat. Everything about this bag is awesome — the D ring in the center is metal, the main zipper attachments are metal, the duffle-bag-like strap clips are metal, as opposed to plastic. You can easily add a carabiner to some of these existing attachments/loops. Plenty of straps to consider for travel purposes. The only shortcoming on this is the zippers themselves do not have a locking mechanism or holes for easily locking them if you need or want to with a clip. (The bottom of the backpack can zip open and this I wish wasn’t a feature because the top already has plenty of room to zip open.) The reflectivity of the metal zipper which contrasts with the zipper teeth colors and the fabric invite the ease for your pet to see any reflection of light that may peer through between where zippers meet, and since they don’t lock, if you have a crafty cat, they can jump out (our cat showed us when we tried to fit him in). The zipper situation can potentially be remedied with narrow but solid key rings but it would need to be tested. There is one side of the backpack (the left?) that could benefit with an extra little window of ventilation since the lining pads are clearly made of plastic fibers (faux fur polyester, it is not labeled but my credibility comes from learning from seamstresses and am also involved in jewelry making) which can get warm and stuffy after a while, in my opinion. Other than that, this bag is amazing – just wish it was 1-1.5 inches taller and wider in all directions. The convertible feature of being a vertical carrier and backpack with this degree of thoughtful construction is not so common to find these days. Please consider offering a larger version of this bag, thanks!

Great for air travel
I took my rather large (14 lb) cat in this on Southwest Airlines. No problems and fit under the seat perfectly. It’s got a super soft fleece bottom for the cat to lay on. A lot of other thoughtful features, too: a leash tether so the kitty can pop their head out without running off, a cover flap with two magnets to keep it from dangling, a detachable shoulder strap… It’s super versitile, and very high quality – the mesh does not feel like it’s going to fall apart and the zippers are locking. My only wish would be for more storage, as I had to forego one carry-on for the kitty. Definitely recommend, and the fact that it’s a backpack makes it so much easier to travel around with.

The bottom part is very narrow! My dog, a Yorkie was not feeling very comfy in it! Probably just good for cats!!! Too bad because i liked the color and the higth !! I returned it and got reimbursed….

This carrier perfectly fits my two growing kittens. The mesh is strong enough for me to feel safe having them in there with their little claws and it is very breathable. The soft padding gives them a little extra grip while I move around and the sturdy sides don’t collapse in around them. They are super happy in their carrier and even go into it on their own when they feel a little overwhelmed by a new space. I love it so much!

I really love this backpack. The material is very sturdy, the zippers work well and it has many ‘windows’ for your pet to peek through. You’re able to lay it down horizontally when not used as a backpack to give your pet more space to rest. It comes with a compartment exclusive for poopie bags which I find amazing and handy. It also offers space for a water bottle and a third compartment for treats, your phone/passport and/or even a book! Very comfortable and light to wear.I ordered this for my 8lbs Pomeranian and he fits just right. He seems to be ok with it but I wish he had a little more space to curl up and rest even in a vertical position.Regardless, it’s a great pet carrier!

This is perfect for letting my indoor cats see the world without leaving them outside to be vulnerable on their own. The backpack doubles as a horizontal carrier too so itâs good for needing to take them in the car or on public transport too. Itâs very roomy making it comfortable for even my large male 4kg cat.The only thing Iâd change is Iâd put some padding to support the humans back at the bottom edge of the carrier because when being used as a backpack with the cat inside, the weight of them puts a bit of pressure on the lower back/ upper bum area making it a little uncomfortable. Having a padded cushion there would be helpful but other than that itâs purrrfect. You could always fix your own cushion bolster on like I have but it would be nice to see it come with it for the price.
