You should always be mindful of your pup (he’s certainly mindful of you), but one of the most common problems with using a regular retractable leash is the danger that comes from unexpected situations. A dog can suddenly lunge into traffic, towards another pet, or at a child with an oh-so-delicious ice-cream cone. If you’re distracted for even a second, you may not be able to act quickly enough with a normal retractable leash with a manual thumb-brake. Dial-A-Distance puts an end to those risks, allowing you to stop worrying and start enjoying the walk just as much as your dog. When life’s little distractions happen, Dial-A-Distance is your safety net. It automatically stops your dog at a safe length YOU set with just the turn of a dial.

STRONG: NOW RATED FOR DOGS UP TO 70 LBS (Packaging may say 55 lbs) Dial-A-Distance is lightweight and compact, but it’s also durable and strong, tested to over 275 lbs of pulling force.
THE RIGHT RANGE AT THE RIGHT TIME, EVERY TIME: Dial-A-Distance auto-brakes at the safe maximum length YOU set (from 0 to 15ft.) with just the turn of a dial. Have all the benefits of a retractable leash (more freedom, more exercise, less tangles), minus the dangers!
FREEDOM AND SAFETY IN ONE: When life’s little distractions happen, Dial-A-Distance is your safety net. Have all the freedom of a retractable leash, but always within a safe range that you decide. Dial-A-Distance extends out and retracts in as your dog moves around, but when your dog reaches max range, Dial-A-Distance keeps your dog safe. For additional safety, Dial-A-Distance uses a strong tape leash instead of a cord.
SET ANY MAX RANGE FROM 0 TO 15 FEET: On a crowded sidewalk? Maybe try a max of 2 feet. On a more open trail? Try 7 or 8 feet. In a wide-open park? Let your dog enjoy the full 15-foot range. Dial-A-Distance can always be the perfect safe length for where you are now. Also includes a standard manual thumb brake for when you want to stop your dog short of the maximum range.
EASY TO USE: Dial-A-Distance adjusts in a second with just the turn of a dial. Works with any collar or harness.
Customers say
Customers find that the leash has a good length and length adjustment. They appreciate the ability to set a certain length and the dial that adjusts the maximum distance. The leash works smoothly and is easy for them to use. However, some customers dislike the lock stability and weight. There are mixed opinions on the build quality and retractability.

Logical Paradox –
Brilliant!
Non-retractable leashes are a pain. The minute the lease is not taught, the slack inevitably results in the leash going under your dogâs legs. You then have to pause the walk and untangle your furry companion.Retractable leashes solve this problem by⦠well, being retractable. Because they automatically reel in the slack, the lease adjusts itâs length to whatever distance the dog is, so thereâs no slack to droop down to where the dog can get it underneath them.Since most retractable leashes also have a manual, push-button brake that can fix the leash at the current length, and most of these units also have allow you to lock the brake, they also allow you to adjust the length of your leash moment-by-moment to suite your current walking conditions or needs. So, when you are on the shoulder of a busy road, you can lock it in really short to keep your furry friend close by; but, when you get to the park, you can unlock it or lengthen it, to allow them to run free a greater distance. The problem with retractable leashes is, of course, that if you use the locking brake to fix the length of the leash, you have just lost all the benefits of the leashâs retracting ability. Youâre essentially turning it into a fixed length leash! And youâre back to the problems with slack getting underneath your dog. Also, if youâre just holding the brake by using the button, itâs all to easy to have your thumb slip off, especially if your buddy unexpectedly bolts. Even the lock on some models can seem like you might not want to rely on it in a safety situation. This may cause you to pull out leashes of different macimum lengths to meet your plans. But⦠what if you could have a retractable leash, that allowed you to dynamically change the maximum length at any given time, while still being retractable? This lets you retain the convenience of the retractability, while changing the maximum distance.Thatâs exactly what this is and does. You still get the manual push-button break, and the brake does have a locking ability. But you also can turn the dial to set the maxium length of the leash when itâs not locked. So, when youâre walking on the side of the road, dial it to 2 or 3 feet to keep your pet close by. Then, when the situation allows for it, dial it up to 8 or 9 feel to let them roam more freely, but maybe still keep them on the path and our of the brush. Once you are in an open area where anything goes, you can turn it up to a full 15 feet, which is a pretty good distance. All without losing the retraction and without needing to fumble with annoying slack on the line. And all, too, while still being able to brake at a momentâs notice and lock the brake if the situation calls for it (a great way to pause things in place while you dial the distance down, for example).I canât speak to durability or quality, because itâs too soon. But, what I can say is that for me this was one of those things that once you have it you feel like youâve just solved a problem you thought there was no solution to.

Where have you been all my life?!?!
For decades, I’ve been frustrated with retractable leashes for the very problem that this leash solves. When I want to shorten the max length of other retractable leashed, the spring reaction stops working, of course. With this, you use a dial to set maximum length, and the spring retraction continues to work. LOVE IT.Ideal for walks where you want to provide different lengths at different times during a walk. e.g. walking on the sidewalk in a more crowded area, 4 feet, continuing on as the sidewalk becomes less crowded, 6 feet, upon entering the short creek trail where leash is still required but there’s hardly anyone there and large patches of grass, max length, down where the creek is narrower and some of the bushes have ticks, 10 feet. This has been such a huge boon for my walks that it’s hard to describe how happy I am with this.

Overall really great, but beware the the clasp
The video sort of says it all about the clasp. Happened on day one or two of using it when the little guy was just a pup – four or five months old. I immediately rigged up an alternate clasp system with a third party clasp and a carabiner and short bungee between the two. Since then, have had zero issues with the assembly over a hundreds of miles of walks. (This dog loves to walk – typical walk with him is 2-3 miles, which he will do 2-3 times a day if I am up for it.) I live in downtown Minneapolis, which has a handful of parks in its environs. I really appreciate (as I think he does) being able to dial in a short length (3′) when walking him on the sidewalks with busy traffic, but then dial him out to 10′-15′ when we hit a park. I was quite panicked when the clasp spontaneously failed as seen in the video, but if the dial-a-length mechanism ever degrades as other reviewers have described (but I have not experienced), I would order another one immediately.Update August 2021: Still have it, still works. It got a little wonky a few months back, with the distance control not having a good positive lock when dialing it around. I disassembled it, cleared out some accumulated dust and debris and reassembled. Not quite good as new, but practically so. The exterior shows some wear. May buy another one just have as a backup if this one ever does give up the ghost.

Good while it lasted
Probably a great leash if you have a calm, non-jumpy dog. My dog got spooked by a car and took off while this leash was attached and simply broke through the locking mechanism. Now the leash wont extend at all and is useless. This was an expensive leash for me and I expected it to hold up based on the price. I will note that until it broke it worked very nicely and did not get tangled like some do.

Excellent ease of use and flexibility.
I have had this for about 2 weeks. I should mention that my dog is only just over 30 lbs, so definitely not a big dog. I link the handle to a waist belt and run the lead through a carabiner attached to my handlebars. The adjustable length allows me to easily adjust the lead length to the conditions I will be riding in and when they change itâs pretty easy to adjust to them. The retraction mechanism is strong enough to keep the lead neatly tucked away yet soft enough for my dog not to be jerked around from minor distance fluctuations between the bike and her. Of course if she tries to go to far when she spies a rabbit the flexible lock stops her. Similarly, when I walk her, I also appreciate how easy it is to adjust the lead length to suit the walking environment. The adjustable lead length seems solid and has been very reliable. I also like the way the quick stop control works. I find it much easier to engage and disengage than others models Iâve used. I hope it meets the test of time. I would definitely buy this again if I got close to a year out of it … I also hope it does betterð.
